MICA

One of the icons of Singapore is the MICA building (Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts). Otherwise known as the Old Hill Street Police Station, it was erected in 1934 to house the Hill Street Police Station and Barracks on the orders of the British 'Colonial Secretary of the Straits Settlements'. It is now gazetted as a national monument and what attracts the eyes of any visitor to the Clarke Quay area is the array of rainbow colours the shutters display.

The Durians

The Esplanade Theatres opened in 2002 and fast became a landmark of Singapore thanks to their great location by the Bay and their amazing design in shape of two durian halves. The durian being the south east asian fruit par excellence it brings a real local identity to the buildings and is a very interesting architectural feat. On top of a couple of intimate theatres and recital studios, those buildings mostly house a fantastic 1600-seat concert hall and a big 2000-seat theatre.
